Why does a listener actually bond with a musician? Or, as one would usually say, why does a listener become a fan? In many cases, it’s due to identification between the listener and the musician. The listener identifies with the musician, the music, or certain messages in the music. They see themselves in it.
For musicians, it’s important to know the reasons for identification with their listeners because only then can they use this to gain new listeners. Usually, life circumstances and emotional situations are responsible for listeners identifying and then becoming a fan.
If a musician consistently presents these opportunities for identification on social media, it will happen that listeners follow them and also like their music. A sure bet for musicians to rely on when building a fanbase.
Of course, it’s not entirely easy to work out these opportunities for identification. In our “Self-Marketing” program, we support musicians in developing these guidelines and provide them with individual guidance.
